The Pitfalls of DIY

October 8th, 2009

Practically another week has gone by, and while we’re nearing one finish line, there are still more and more things to do before we can start to enjoy our new remodeled attic space. It’s really starting to wear thin.
With the October chill in the air, all I want to do is “nest” in my new [...]

The Burglary: Final Chapter?

August 13th, 2009

If you’ve been reading this blog for a while (for which I’m very grateful!), then you may remember that we were burglarized in June 2008, right before we came home from work on a Friday night.
Except for the few things I was wearing, the burglar took every single piece of jewelry I owned, including my [...]

The Bitter Taste of Plaster

April 5th, 2009

So much has happened in the last three weeks — some good, some bad — that it feels like it’s been months since I last posted.
When I last left you, the remaining walls on the first floor had been patched and plastered. I mentioned that I was a little pissed about something that had happened [...]

Ready for Prime Time

March 13th, 2009

The plaster work is done, thank the gods. What a mess. I really hope to never have to do that again. No matter how much you think you prepared for it, you find that you’re not.
We taped all the woodwork with blue painter’s tape and covered the windows, closet doors and furniture with plastic. [...]

Yes, another Outdoor Project

June 4th, 2008

I know I’ve been non-stop with the garden/patio/outdoor posts, so I apologize if I’ve turned you off or bored you to tears, but lately that’s all we’ve been doing.
If you live in a climate that is anything like Chicago’s then you can probably relate to the very small window of really good weather days we [...]

You Evil Bunny!

May 15th, 2008

See how nicely this New Jersey Tea shrub is growing?

It was sprayed with Deer and Rabbit Repellent.
This is what happens when you forget to spray the ones you planted elsewhere:

Argh!
I think it will recover.
Lesson learned: the repellent works, and don’t ever trust a bunny.

Fans United

February 19th, 2008

We accomplished a fair amount of little things over the weekend. We temporarily stashed most of our books on the attic staircase during the woodwork and plaster work phase, and even though they were covered with newspaper and plastic, the books were filthy. So I cleaned them off and put them back in place in [...]

The Official Tally

Total number of Trick-or-Treaters: 3
Total number of princess/fairy costumes: 3
Can you understand why I don’t like to bother with Halloween (see previous post)??

This is NOT a Halloween Post

October 31st, 2007

Nope. Not from me. I don’t hate Halloween, but it really doesn’t do anything for me. I dread going to a Halloween party, because I really get no joy out of dressing in costume. I see it as more of a hassle and waste of time and money to come up with a creative costume [...]

One of America’s Best for Families

July 18th, 2007

Our little village of Morton Grove was recently recognized in the August issue of Family Circle magazine as one of America’s Top 10 towns for families. They chose from among 1,850 towns across the country with a population between 15,000 and 150,000 (Morton Grove is around 22,000) that “combined big city opportunities with suburban charm.”
I [...]
